Why Every New Rider Should Take a Motorcycle Safety Course

Updated: Sep 9, 2025

Getting your motorcycle licence is a big step. But before you hit the road, there’s something every rider, especially new ones, should seriously consider: a certified motorcycle safety course.

At Learn2Ride, we’ve helped thousands of riders get started, and the message is always the same. The course is worth it. Here’s why.

1. You’ll Actually Learn to Ride, Not Just Pass a Test

The licensing process through the MTO is important, but it doesn’t cover everything you need to handle real-world riding. A good safety course teaches you how to:

  • Stop quickly without skidding

  • Swerve around unexpected obstacles

  • Take corners smoothly and with control

  • Handle the bike confidently at low speeds

You won’t pick that up from a handbook or by riding around a parking lot.

2. You Can Skip the Road Test

If you take an MTO-approved course like ours, you can skip the M1 exit road test and move directly to your M2 licence. Upon successful completion of the course, you’ll just need to visit your local DriveTest Centre to upgrade your licence.

3. It Can Lower Your Insurance

Most insurance companies in Ontario offer discounts to riders who complete certified safety training. Depending on your age and the type of bike you ride, this could save you a few hundred dollars a year.

4. You’ll Ride with Confidence

We see it every weekend. Students show up nervous and unsure, and by the end of the course, they leave feeling capable and ready. Training helps you avoid the common mistakes new riders make, and it gives you the skills to stay calm and in control in traffic. Confidence doesn’t come from hope. It comes from knowing what you’re doing.

5. You’re Not Just Taking a Course, You’re Joining a Community

When you train at Learn2Ride, you’re surrounded by people who actually care. Our instructors want you to do well. You'll meet other new riders who are going through the same thing, and you’ll leave with more than just a certificate. You’ll leave with real-world experience and a stronger connection to the riding community.
